There are plenty of ways to extend the life of your current wardrobe and avoid buying maternity clothes. In the first trimester, every woman’s shape will change but in varying degrees and you’ll most certainly reach a point where maternity clothes don’t quite fit yet your regular jeans and tops are just that little bit too tight.

Here are 5 ways to get the most out of your pre-maternity wardrobe and avoid buying maternity clothes until you really need them.

  1. Switch to stretchy pants

Pants with an elastic waist are going to be your best friend. Yoga pants, leggings or any other casual pants with an adjustale elxasitc band should not only be a stable in your postpartum watdrove but your maternity outfits too.

  1. Unbutton your pants

Okay this sounds strange but you’d be sueprised at the number of pregnant women who do not button up their pants all the way to the top. (I’d suggest many of us who have just had a large meal have done the same at one piint). Covering up your waist with a long shirt or a stretchy top that helps t keep them from falling down is a great idea.

  1. Opt for the next size up

Depending on the garment, it is possilble that you can simply get the next size up. Chances are you’ve already got some clothes hidden away that are of a larger size. All you need is that little bit of extra room around the middle.

  1. Belly band

As the name suggests, a belly band is one of the best invenstions. It is a bands of fabric designed to hide that part of your belly that hangs out. It covers mostly just the middle part of your body and the top of your pants (which may be unbuttoned).

  1. Layers

Layers are also a fabulous idea. If your favourite top is just a little too fitted, you can always layer it with another shirt. A chunky sweater or comfy cardigan can also hide plenty and leaving a few buttons open can give you the extra room needed.
