There is a lot of conflicting information on whether or not it’s safe to wear hair extensions while pregnant.
Hair extensions are typically applied to strands of hair with hair glue, however there are variations. If you are using the glue-on variety, it’s this glue that contains the harmful chemicals which are the main area of concern and considered unsafe for use during pregnancy.
Without going into details of these chemicals, the fumes alone have been known to be harmful even to those not pregnant. If you already have hair extensions in prior to falling pregnant, there is no need to have them removed unless they start to cause scalp irritations.
Our advice: Avoid extensions that require hair glue
Safer hair extension alternatives
- Clip in hair extensions: These are fun and are simple to attach. They come in a range of lengths, colors and even styles and can help you create a new look every day! You’ll look like you’ve just stepped out of a salon.
- Braiding hair extensions: This process involves braiding hair onto into hair and does not pose any safety risks for the pregnant woman. One of the good things about the braiding process is that it actually helps protect your hair from the harsh elements of the weather and can even help reduce hair loss since you are not constantly pulling the hair.
Even though regular glue-on hair extensions may seem like a beautiful idea, there are many risks associated with getting them done. Hair glues are not considered safe during pregnancy and should always be avoided. For an inexpensive alternative that is safe and can be done at home, opt for clip in hair extensions!
