Maternity sizes work the same as regular clothing sizes. When first shopping for
maternity clothes it’s a little confusing knowing what size you should get.
As a rule of thumb, buy the size you normally buy.
So if you are typically a small, purchase a small. If you usually wear a size 10, look for pregnancy clothing that is a size 10.
Apply this for all items including maternity tops and jeans. You’ll still shop for a pair of pants in that same size – just the maternity version.
Should you buy non maternity clothes in larger sizes?
Try not to opt for non-maternity clothes in sizes one or two larger than what you normally wear. You’ll find that they don’t always sit right, won’t be tailored to your bump and certainly not as comfortable. Larger size clothes will have all this additional fabric that you won’t know what to do with. Maternity clothes on the other hand are designed to sit in the right places, have stretchy belly panels and allow you to expand as needed.
The only time this may be a good option is if you are looking to buy a maxi dress or similar. These are loose, comfy and work as a great investment for after birth too.
How to choose quality maternity clothing that fits
When looking to buy maternity clothing, choose high-quality, well-made maternity garments that include some or all of these features:
- Tops with gathering or ruching on the sides
- Solid colors or patterns that create a slimming effect
- Adjustable waistbands or drawstrings
- Empire waist tops and dresses
It is also important to look for fabrics that breath, are soft and durable. Of course they need to stretch too. Natural fabrics such as cotton, modal, and bamboo are great choices. Anything blended with spandex or lycra are also a great option as together with natural materials they offer stretch, support and retain shape. Everything you need as your body changes.

Good luck with your maternity clothing purchases. Remember, choose the size you normally buy and you’ll be on track!
