A common complaint about buying maternity clothes is price. When you shop to save, you generally encounter lower quality collections. Poorly made maternity clothes fall apart quickly in the wash, shrink or don’t retain shape after laundering, slip down over your belly, ride up, make you too hot, make you sweat and cause you to itch!
Why are maternity clothes so expensive?
Determine your budget for buying maternity clothes, or whether you really need them at all, and determine some of the essential pieces that will be the foundation of your daily wear. The key is to ensure items are versatile to be worn at night, to work, out for lunch with friends and comfortable enough to be worn throughout your pregnancy.
Some everyday favorites worth your investment are:
- Basic maternity tank tops, camisoles and t-shirts
- Maternity jeans
- At least one maternity dress
- A pair of black, dressy slacks
- Maternity leggings
Combined with items from your regular wardrobe, these maternity essentials will take you through the seasons and stages of your pregnancy in comfort.
Remember too that you do not need to buy brand new designer maternity clothes from department stores. You can shop online and find lots of cheap maternity clothes or pop into a thrift store where you may just find some second hand maternity clothes that are almost brand new!
Maternity clothes are expensive because they are designed to support women through various stages of their pregnancy. Not that this explains it, but it can to a degree justify some of the expense. Having said that it is wonderful to know that there are plenty of alternatives to maternity clothes, lots of clothes that you can wear to breastfeed just as comfortably and even more items you can enjoy wearing postpartum. You don’t need to wear maternity clothes! It is your choice!
